While they are typically only plant eating, (i.e. Hibiscus flowers) they have no natural predator to keep them in check within the food chain. Populating near waterways, they are breeding and becoming larger in numbers each year. Problems include damaged vegetation, residential home intrusion and damage to property with their high acidic faecal matter. Homeowners have been hiring pest removal services, reporting them to their local municipalities and have even gone to the extreme of killing these lizard on their own. The Green Iguana can grow quite large when unchecked by nature and an endless source of food, most local residents consider them pests and unwanted inhabitants to their yards and would like to see them gone.

The mall is owned by the Westfield Group, which acquired it in 2007 from SPG-FCM Ventures, a 50/50 joint venture between an entity owned by Simon Property Group and funds managed by Farallon Capital Management; SPG-FCM Ventures had acquired the previous owner, Mills Corporation, earlier that year. Mills had acquired it from Cadillac Fairview Corporation of Toronto in 2003. The mall opened in 1978 with a Burdines store as its anchor. Popular department stores and anchors including Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's and Regal Cinemas. In February 28, 2013 it was announced a 12-screen Regal Cinemas was opened in the mall on December 2013. In 2015, Sears Holdings spun off 235 of its properties, including the Sears at Westfield Broward, into Seritage Growth Properties. In 2017 the size of the Sears store was reduced by half and other shops were opened in the space, including Noire the Nail Bar; the Sears store closed in 2018. The second floor of the former Sears is expected to become Powerhouse Gym and Game Time.
